About Xi Choin

What did you do during college?

Why I came to Japan

Since my parents lived in Japan, I came to Japan after graduating from high school. The reason why I came to Japan is slightly different from other international students.

When I came to Japan, I could not speak Japanese at all. I attended a Japanese language school for a year and a half. Later,  I went on to university and graduate school.

What career advice would you recommend for job hunters?

About job hunting

A very good experience

I did exactly the same job hunting as Japanese people. You can register on the job hunting site, participate in an internship, take an SPI exam, and have an interview. I had the goal of working for a Japanese company so I made the same effort as the Japanese. It was hard, however, it was also a very good experience

Why I decided to join the company

I learned about our company when an active employee came to my school for a company information session. The person was an alumnus of the seminar and explained in detail about the company and business contents. I decided to join the company because of the steel plant business which supports domestic and overseas industries and the environmental solutions divisions which provides a variety of solutions to environmental problems.

Job hunting should take advantage of the strengths of international students

I do not think there is any problem that Japanese and international students are selected with the same content. However, international students have the advantage of being born and raised in that country. I think it is a waste to make everything Japanese style, such as ideas and rules, and to bury “individuality''.

Depending on the country of overseas expansion, it may be easier to collect information than Japanese employees, and it may be possible to respond flexibly on site. I think it is necessary for companies to create an environment where they can work by taking advantage of the characteristics of international students.

What are the beneficial skills needed for working in Japan?

About working environment

accomplishment

Employees can take on responsible work from a young age. It is an environment where young people can play an active role in big business negotiations and overseas projects.

My work is pre order for the Steel Plant Division and I am in charge of a wide range of tasks from technical sales to design such as quotation, equipment proposal, and basic design. Until now, I have experience in process design and project manager. When I succeeded in successfully launching the ;astes theory of coke dry digestion equipment, which I was invp;ved in as an outbound project manager of the steel plant division in the past, I really felt a sense of accomplishment.

International experience

The product I am in charge of is a dry desulfurization and denitration facility that removes sulfur oxides and nitrogen oxides from exhaust gas, and I took over the business from Sumitomo Ju KIkai Kogyo last year.

In fact I am also participating in market research conducted in China before the transfer, and I feel that it is a rare opportunity for young people to participate in technology transfer projects.

In the future, we plant to expand this equipment overseas such as in China. Therefore, about half of the year I travel abroad, especially to China. When I was a student, I longed to work by going back and forth between Japan and my home country, however, in reality, it is harder than I thought. At the same time, I find it rewarding to negotiate directly with countries and get involved in the conclusion of contracts. In addition, the feature of this project team is that there are relatively many young employees. It is a good stimulus for young people to exchange opinions and work together.

After joining the company

I have not felt any gaps since I was assigned and in Japan, new employee education is really wonderful. There are many cultures that prioritize mid career recruitment overseas, and there is almost no concept of spending money and time to grow for new employees.

Japanese complinese that educate and grow new graduates are especially attractive to international students. I think there are still few places in China that have a solid training program to the same level as Japan.
